LOCAL BUISNESS SUPORT LOCAL DRIVER
After a tough 2009 season Barry-John McHenry from Raheny plans to challenge for the title in the highly contested Dunlop Abarth Cup 2010. After a year of winning trophies in 2008, Barry-John moved up to the premier saloon car category in 2009. He struggled all season with reliability troubles but is sure that 2010 will be a different story altogether. His team, BT Racing, have rebuilt the car over the winter period. “We believe that the team and Barry-John have the ability to fight for top honours this year” said Brendan Travers, team owner. The championship covers a lot of ground this year with two double headers in Kirkistown, Northern Ireland, a treble header in Anglesey in Wales and the rest of the rounds in Mondello Park, Kildare, with a non championship race in the famous Phoenix Park Motor Races.
Barry-John is also planning to contest the newly formed Irish touring car championship (ITCC). This is a new and exciting championship. With more open regulations Barry-John’s car will be down on power compared to the bigger high powered machinery that are expected to enter this class, but he feels that he can take a few scalps with the agile Abarth. For the second year in a row his title sponsor will be Tom Kane Motors Recovery and Transportation.
The first race of the year is on the 27th of March in Kirkistown which is one of Barry-Johns favourite tracks. “I had my first win on that track so it’s an ideal place to start the season in the Dunlop Abarth Cup. We are always on the pace there and this year we should really shine” Barry-John commented. Barry-John also has McHenry Car Sales, Thrifty Car Rental and JH Autobody onboard for the 5th year in a row as sponsors. They were also joined over the winter by Speedy Tyres, Cable Technical Services and Artane Auto. “We worked hard over the winter to get a budget together and we have some very loyal sponsors. Tom Kane Recovery and Transportation agreed to be title sponsor again and without their help we probably would not be racing this year. We worked very hard to get all the other sponsors on board too and we hope we can give them a good return on their investment, together with BT Racing, all our loyal sponsors and myself, I believe we can become title contender this year”.

After a tough 2009 season Barry-John and BT Racing are preparing for a new start in the 2010 Dunlop Abarth Championship. The car is currently being rebuilt for the new campain in BT Racings workshop in Kildare while Barry-John tries to find the budget for the year. He is currently in talks with a few sponsors but is desperitly seeking people who might be interested in coming on board for the coming season.

The last two rounds of the 2009 Fiat Abarth cup were held in Mondello International track at the leinster trophy motor races. Possibly the most famous race of the year. Both these races will be shown on On The Limit Sports (satanta sports, sky sports and motors tv). Qualifying as per all year was once again where Barry-John struggled. He struggled to get that quick lap in and qualified 14th out of the 18 entries for both races. The good news was that he was chosen to have the onboard camera for the television which would guarantee good entertainment as the Raheny native is well known for being a bit fiery in the car especially when challenged with a low position with him hafting to charge threw the field.
As per all year Barry-John managed a great start to climb 4 positions on lap 1. He then droped 2 and back up three to 9th with two laps to go. He then lost power unusually to drop back to 12th. The car then started running faultlessly and he managed to climb back up to 10th before the checkered flag.
Race two was for the famous Dunlop trophy. Well this race turned out to be possibly the best race of the year to watch from the grandstands. Once again Barry-John's disappointing qualifying pace was to be his down turn as he left himself with an up-hill battle but as Bary-John is not one to shy away from a good battle he started 14th but was quickly making up places. With an 8 car train battling for 4th place lap after lap the positions were changing drastically. Barry-John was as high as 6Th when Derick Graham an ex Abarth Champion tried to put him in the wall. The race went on and the battles were fierce threw out the field. Barry-John eventually finished in 9th place. He was troubled on the last 3 laps by an overheating engine with his water temperature reading 115 degrees. But as this was the last race of the year and the battle was so good Barry-John claims he was stopping for no-one.
After a long hard season Barry-John will have to go and decide what his plans for 2010 are. He really enjoyed his first year in Abarths however there was many disappointments along the way with a few highs. With the times that are in it it will be hard to find a good budget for 2010 but time is on our side and we will start making plans for next year in the next few Weeks.

Fiat Punto Abarth racer Barry-John McHenry endured to tough weekends in his 170bhp BT Racing car in the last month. In testing at Kirkistown in Northern Ireland , he had again surprised the series regulars with some blistering times in testing and was looking forward to a good result in the race. However, bad luck struck again, when a ball joint on the front suspension collapsed on his second lap of qualifying. This left the team with a race against time to repair the car for the race and also left Barry John at the back of the grid. The car was rebuilt but was not handling as well as before and this restricted Barry-John to 10th in race one and 13th in race two. A far cry from the results he had expected with is new found pace.
Two weeks later, the team headed to the Phoenix Park in the centre of Dublin for the 2009 Phoenix Park Motor Races, on the 80th anniversary of the 1929 Irish Grand Prix, at the same venue. The team set up in the paddock on the Friday afternoon and were in good spirits as they looked forward to the biggest race of the year. Barry-John had plenty of support as he had invited friends and family as well as his sponsors to join him in the paddock for the weekend. Race one started well for Barry-John and he was running in 7th place, right with the leaders, when he hit a drain on the road circuit at high speed. Unfortunately this damaged the steering and he had no choice but to retire. The team burnt the midnight oil into the early hours making sure Barry-John’s car was 100% for race two on the Sunday. In race two, he again made a good getaway and immediately moved up to fifth, right on the back bumper of multiple Park winner Gordon Kellett. He then missed a gear on the exit of the chicane dropping to 6th. In the latter stages of the race, the recurring problem again reared its head as the car inexplicably began to lose power. Barry-John used his head and concentrated on getting the car to the finish, which he managed in 7th place.
“Obviously, I’m disappointed”, he said after the race, “We’ve had loads of pace lately but Lady Luck definitely hasn’t been on my side! I think I’ll have a beer and a barbeque with my friends and sponsors anyway to round off the weekend!”
