McHenry Fires Warning Shot

Barry-John | Friday 10th July 2009, 2:38pm

After a long 2 month layoff, Barry-John McHenry returned to action at the Ty Croes circuit in North Wales last weekend for rounds 5 and 6 of the 2009 Dunlop Abarth Cup. Having struggled with a down on power engine thus far in the season, the BT racing team had worked around the clock on Barry-John’s Tom Kane recovery backed car and after a  successful two day test in Kirkistown in Northern Ireland , both team and driver were confident of a good result.

In Friday testing on the quick Ty Croes circuit, Barry-John was immediately on the pace, surprising many of his fellow teams and competitors as he lapped on the pace of the pole time in 2008. Unfortunately the heavens opened for qualifying and with minimal wet testing, Barry was back in 9th place on the grid for race one. It stayed wet for the race and the decision was made to go for a points finish. Barry-John stuck to this plan and having made a place early on, drove steadily to bring the car home in 8th place.

To the team’s delight, the rain stopped and sunshine arrived before race two. Barry-John started in 10th place but as soon as the lights changed, he began a charge which had the crowd on their toes. Just two laps in, he had moved up to sixth pace and was closing the gap to fifth! By mid race he had taken fifth place and with a string of quick laps, began to close on the leading pack, comprising Liam Denning, Alistair Kellett, Gordon Kellett and Noel Greene. Despite being the fastest car on track in the closing stages, Barry-John ran out of laps, but crossed the line a delighted 5th place.

“I’m delighted, both for myself and BT racing”, said Barry-John afterwards, “we proved today that we are now genuine frontrunners in this competitive series and we’re not finished yet!”

"It’s a big step forward for us all” said team boss Brendan Travers, “and there is definitely more to come. We’re aiming for a podium soon and I’m confident we’ll get it!”

MCHENRY GEARS UP

Barry-John | Wednesday 24th June 2009, 4:32pm

Barry-John McHenry travels to Kirkistown in Northern Ireland this Friday to test his 170bhp Punto Abarth before heading over to wales on the 3/4/5th of July for the next round of the championship. Having suffered various mechanical problems with a down on power engine, the car has now been completely rebuilt by BT Racing, and both team and driver are confident of a productive days’ testing. The former Uno Cup race winner has struggled with an engine some 15bhp down on the class regulars but he made the decision to have the car rebuilt during the mid season break. “BT Racing have traced the problem”, he said, “and the car is now producing a lot more power. Kirkistown, on the Ards Peninsula, is the fastest circuit in the country so that is where we will test the car!” The car has already been on a rolling road and is running perfectly, just in time for the second half of the season. Barry-John and the team faced a race against time to prepare the car before this weekend as they have a packed schedule of racing and testing ahead, with five weekends of the next eight fully booked up with race meetings!

Barry-John will also race at the Phoenix Park International Races in the centre of Dublin in August and he plans a big weekend there, with full hospitality and catering for his guests and sponsors. This meeting takes place on 8/9 August so keep your diary free and keep an eye on www.mchenrycarsales.com for further details!!

Fiat Abarths round 1 & 2

Barry-John | Wednesday 29th April 2009, 4:07pm

After a long wait, the first round of the Dunlop Fiat Abarth Cup took place at Mondello Park on the 26th of April. Graduating from the Dunlop Uno Cup to Ireland ’s most competitive Saloon car Championship, Barry-John had signed with top Saloon car race team BT Racing for 2009. After a lot of winter testing the team went into the toughest saloon car championship in Ireland  ready for battle.

However the weekend did not start well. In Saturday testing after only 5 laps the engine blew up. The car and driver were sidelined for the rest of the day. With the spare engine still not ready for the new season the team had no option but to to rent another car off rival team Steve Griffin Motorsport. The deal was all done very late on Saturday night and the team only got to prepare the car at 6am on raceday. Barry-John started his first ever qualifying session in an Abarth in the rain in a car he had never sat in before and qualified for both races in 9th place.

Race one was dry and Barry-John surprised all the series regulars to battle his way up to cross the line in 5th place in his first Abarth race. For race 2, in difficult conditions, he dropped back to 12th place in the first lap but quickly charged back to 8th before the red flag came out after Nigel Pratt barrel rolled his car ending the race 6 minutes early. Barry-John was very disappointed as he was reeling in the group in front off him and was eying up a second top 5 from the weekend. After the race 2008 Uno Cup frontrunner Barry-John was happy to take home 2 solid finishes in an unfamiliar car. The next round is on Mondello international track where Barry-John will revert back to his original car and will be hoping for more success.

“I’m delighted with my results”, said Barry John afterwards, “It’s a big step up from the Unos last year but I think we showed today that we aren’t here to make up numbers!”

Brendan Travers, Team Manager, BT Racing: “We are still testing and developing the car so the engine letting go was a big setback for us. Barry-John drove brilliantly though and I think he will be right at the front before long”

MCHENRY MOVES UP

Barry-John | Wednesday 4th March 2009, 10:45am

Fiat Uno racer Barry John McHenry makes the jump up to Ireland’s top one make saloon racing series, The Dunlop Abarth Cup for 2009. Barry-John, who runs his own business, McHenry Car Sales, was a championship contender in Unos last year but is well aware of the challenge ahead of him this year. “Most Uno drivers graduate to the 1400 Puntos”, he said, “but the costs are broadly similar and there is far more TV coverage for my sponsors in the 1800cc Abarths” Rather than preparing the car himself, as in previous years, Barry John has signed a deal with Kildare based BT Racing, a multi championship winning team. “I know their car preparation is second to none” he said, “so I can just concentrate on my driving on race weekends and running my business during the week!”
